Can I buy insurance from another company outside of the College?

Answer

Health insurance coverage is mandatory while you are registered in your studies at RRC Polytech. You can opt-out only after you have Manitoba Health coverage of your own or through a spouse. If you have a Manitoba Health card, you will be able to opt-out of this coverage by submitting an online opt-out request form with proof of your Manitoba Health. (Please visit https://www.mystudentplan.ca/redriver/en/forms and click the Opt Out button.)

The College is obligated to ensure that you have coverage while you are in your studies. By insuring international students through the College's provider, we can verify that a student's insurance is active and up to date. We would have no way of knowing if a student defaulted or cancelled their insurance with an outside provider, and an uninsured student could expose the College and province to potential liability.

The College uses a third-party provider, Gallivan, to ensure comprehensive medical coverage at the lowest possible cost. Because Gallivan provides the College with a group rate, our insurance prices are much lower than an individual insurance plan with equivalent coverage.

If you have specific questions about your insurance, please contact the Benefits Plan Coordinator at redriverplan@mystudentplan.ca or visit the website at www.mystudentplan.ca/redriver.
